I'm not a very experienced BitTorrent user. T o r r e n t s p y.com always worked well enough for me that I never needed to use any other site to search.

This morning I ran a search there and received an error message saying they were no longer servicing folks in the US. Can anyone suggest an alternate site? I'm fine with PMs if you wanna go that route

what's the deal with passwords?

I seem to run into many torrents that require passwords. Someone posts the torrent on a place like torrnetspy. I download the file and fire up the torrent, and it says "rejected. Password required". Then I go back to the posting on torrentspy and read the comments, -- everyone's asking what the password is, and no one's providing it. What gives?

Why I *deserve* an Oink invite

There's a lot of people just asking for 'em out there. I suppose that's fine, how most people go about it. But here: I made a list of reasons why I, me in particular, Orin-self, truly deserves one.

1) I've created a couple successful torrents before (see http://thepiratebay.org/user/Orinnnn )
2) I'm a darn good uploader, and have a relatively high share ratio of 4.284 (see http://www.homepie.org/images/Azureus-stats-lores.jpg )
3) I have a record collection of unusual thrift store music which I'd love to share and the means to transfer them---an external iMic soundcard and Adobe Audition (records pic is here: http://www.homepie.org/images/record-collection.jpg some of which people *might* actually want)
4) I also own a Sony MZ-n10 Minidisc recorder and a pair of Sound Professionals binaural mics (see http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/category.cgi?item=SP-TFB-2 ) --- the kind to record concerts with. I have only a few of those, but my collection pic is here: http://www.homepie.org/images/collected-recordings.jpg
5) I'm a good citizen of http://MySpleen.net, a cartoon tracker which is currently down for maintenance, but could trade an invite for that if the situation arises.
6) Did I mention that I really like rare and under-appreciated music and have been an avid collector and supporter since I figured out one can "download" things from "the web" and that I consider myself "awesome" in "many regards"?

I'm a patient person. If you are an Oink member perusing this forum, please consider me a strong applicant to join your big pink music community in the sky.

Encrypted file sharing is here!

GigaTribe is cool new software that allows you to share specific folders on your computer with friends & family located anywhere there is an internet connection...and it's FREE!

Basically, you allow friends to access specific folders (and therefore files) on your computer which you've chosen to share. They can therefore download files onto their computer and you can do the same from the folders on their computer that they're willing to share. You can even use GigaTribe to access your computer from a remote location (work, etc...).

It's 100% safe (128-bit blowfish encryption, no spyware/adware), you can transfer huge files (no-limit) and it's easy to set up. Furthermore, all exchanges are encrypted, so no one has any way of knowing what you're exchanging with friends. For more info or to download free GigaTribe, go to www.gigatribe.com.

Just for anyone using a Mac using an Intel processor, if you want to install Azureus, you'll need to use a special program d/l. If you install Azureus into the Applications folder and all it does is bounce in the task bar, then dissapear, you have the wrong version. The right version can be found here:

anybody using bitcomet?

A while ago if I had let my bitcomet run for too long my firefox would eventually crash. Or I would be barely connected to the internet, where I couldn't use any browser or email client, but my AIM and IRC would still work (that itself is not that special, but bitcomet caused it for some reason). I fiddled around with the bitcomet connection settings and eventually got it to stop doing that. It worked fine for a couple of months and now everytime I try to connect to any torrent tracker through bitcomet my internet dies. The program itself slows everything else down.

It just goes on and on.

It's very frustrating. Anyone know anything about this?

I was searching through on Mininova the other day, and I noticed they had a search for binaries. I couldn't open the file though. I was wondering if anyone knew how you can open files like that. Anyone have any info? I searched around a little about usenet, and it said something about having a service for it or something. I know they're file's shared in group boards, but I don't know how to access them.

It seems like everything else is faster than Bit Torrent. Edonkey, LimeWire. I've tried to download a lot of popular programs and files, but it seems like they take for ever. I have a fast connection and nothing else going on, but it still takes for ever to find the files and then download.

Well, not only is Loki Torrent gone, it appears that the donations for a legal fund were a scam:

lokitorrent.com now shows the MPAA "You can click, but you can't hide" propaganda/marketing.

I downloaded BT for OSX and I've read what I can find on the BT site, but I'm confused...how do I get started? How do I create a torrent file? It says drag a file to the spot within the window, but nothing happens....?
Where do I search for files?

BitTorrent SEARCH Tool

Hello, all!

So... BitTorrent's legal strengh is that the protocol doesn't provide for file searching, this also makes it less easy to use to locate arbitrary content.

Do you know of tools for locating content?
